What Business Expenses Can Foreigners Deduct in Korea?

“I run a business in Korea. Which expenses can I deduct from my business income?”

For foreign business owners, understanding deductible business expenses can be an important part of managing Korean taxes.

In general, expenses that are directly related to earning business income may be recognized as necessary business expenses when calculating taxable income.

What Are Deductible Business Expenses?

For an individual business owner, taxable business income is generally calculated by taking eligible business expenses into account.

Common examples may include:

  • Office rent and business-related utilities

  • Employee wages

  • Advertising and marketing expenses

  • Business-related travel and transportation

  • Professional service fees

  • Supplies and other operating costs

However, not every expense is automatically deductible.

The expense generally needs to have a connection to the business and be properly supported by appropriate records or documentation.

What About Personal Expenses?

This is where business owners should be particularly careful.

Expenses that are primarily personal rather than business-related generally cannot simply be treated as business expenses.

For example, using a personal credit card for private shopping does not make the purchase a deductible business expense just because you run a business.

When an expense has both business and personal elements, the tax treatment may depend on the specific circumstances.

Keep Proper Records

Keeping accurate records is important when claiming business expenses.

Depending on the expense, documents such as tax invoices, receipts, credit card records, and bank transfer records may help support the expense.

Good record-keeping can make it easier to demonstrate that an expense was actually incurred for business purposes.

A Simple Tax Planning Tip

One of the most important things a business owner can do is keep business and personal expenses clearly separated.

Properly recording legitimate business expenses can help ensure that your taxable income is calculated correctly.

However, expenses should not be claimed simply to reduce taxes. They should be genuinely related to the business and supported by appropriate evidence.

Running a Business in Korea?

If you are a foreign business owner and are unsure whether a particular expense can be recognized for Korean tax purposes, consulting a qualified tax professional can help you determine which expenses are deductible and how they should be documented.

Proper tax planning can help you avoid unnecessary tax payments while reducing the risk of problems during a tax review.
