Can Foreign Residents Benefit from Korea’s New High-Dividend Tax Rules?

“I am a foreign resident investing in Korean stocks. Can I benefit from Korea’s new tax rules for high-dividend companies?”

Potentially, yes.

Starting with qualifying dividends paid in 2026, Korea introduced a special tax treatment for dividends received from certain designated high-dividend Korean companies.

Importantly, the rule is based on Korean tax residency, not nationality. Therefore, a foreign individual who is considered a Korean tax resident may also be able to benefit if the applicable requirements are satisfied.

What Is the High-Dividend Tax Benefit?

Normally, large amounts of interest and dividend income may become subject to Korea’s comprehensive income taxation system when the applicable threshold is exceeded.

Under the new system, qualifying dividends from designated high-dividend companies may instead receive separate taxation treatment.

This can potentially reduce the tax burden for investors who receive significant dividend income.

However, not every dividend-paying Korean company qualifies.

The company itself must meet specific requirements relating to its listing status, dividend payout level, and dividend growth.

Can Foreign Investors Receive the Benefit?

Foreign nationality alone does not prevent someone from using the benefit.

The key issue is whether the investor is treated as a resident for Korean tax purposes.

A foreign resident who owns shares in a qualifying Korean high-dividend company may potentially use the special tax treatment.

Foreign non-residents, however, are generally subject to different Korean withholding and tax treaty rules, so their situation needs to be reviewed separately.

When Does the New Rule Apply?

The new benefit applies beginning with qualifying dividends paid in 2026.

The first relevant Comprehensive Income Tax filing will therefore take place in May 2027.

The National Tax Service has announced that the special treatment will operate temporarily, with eligible dividend income covered through the applicable period ending with the 2030 filing season.

Is the Benefit Automatic?

Not necessarily.

The National Tax Service states that taxpayers who want to apply the high-dividend separate taxation rules must submit the required application when filing their Comprehensive Income Tax Return.

Investors should also confirm whether the company they invested in has officially been classified as a qualifying high-dividend company.

Investing in Korean Dividend Stocks?

If you are a foreign resident receiving dividends from Korean stocks, the new high-dividend tax rules may create an additional tax-planning opportunity.

However, whether the benefit actually applies — and whether it is more advantageous than ordinary taxation — can depend on your Korean tax residency, total financial income, other income, and the specific stocks you hold.

Consulting a qualified tax professional can help you determine whether you qualify for the new high-dividend tax treatment and whether applying for it could reduce your Korean tax burden.
