October VAT Deadline: What Foreign Business Owners in Korea Should Know
“I run a business in Korea. Do I need to file VAT this October?”
If you are a foreign business owner in Korea, October is an important month to check your Value Added Tax (VAT) obligations.
However, not every business has the same filing requirement. Whether you need to file a VAT return or simply pay a preliminary tax notice depends on your business structure and VAT status.
What Is the October VAT Deadline?
The second preliminary VAT period of 2026 covers business transactions from July through September.
Businesses required to file a preliminary VAT return generally need to file and pay by:
October 26, 2026
Corporate businesses are generally subject to this preliminary filing requirement.
What About Individual Business Owners?
Many individual general VAT taxpayers do not file a separate preliminary VAT return in October.
Instead, the National Tax Service may issue a preliminary VAT payment notice based on previous tax information.
Certain small corporations may also be subject to this notice-based system.
For 2026, the payment deadline for preliminary VAT notices is:
November 2, 2026
So, receiving a VAT notice does not necessarily mean that you need to prepare the same VAT return as a corporation.
What If Your Business Has Slowed Down?
If your business performance has declined significantly, or if you qualify for an early VAT refund, there may be circumstances where filing a preliminary return instead of simply paying the amount on the notice is possible.
Whether this option applies — and whether it is beneficial — depends on your current sales, purchases, and overall VAT position.
Does Being a Foreigner Change the VAT Rules?
Generally, no.
Foreign nationality itself does not create a separate VAT system.
What matters is how your Korean business is registered, including whether you operate as an individual business, corporation, general VAT taxpayer, or another type of taxpayer.
Your VAT treatment may also require additional review if you:
Work with overseas clients
Have both taxable and VAT-exempt sales
Operate an online or platform business
Recently started or changed your business
Have experienced a significant decline in sales
Do You Need to Take Action This October?
Do not assume that every business owner has the same October 26 deadline.
Whether you need to file a VAT return, pay a preliminary VAT notice, or consider a different filing method depends on your individual business situation.
If you operate a business in Korea, consulting a qualified tax professional before the deadline can help you confirm your VAT obligations and avoid unnecessary payments or filing issues.
